The Arts Guild of Sonoma is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation supported and maintained by voting Artist-Craftspeople Members. The Guild is also supported by Community Members.
The major objectives of this organization formulate into two categories: First, is to provide opportunities to exhibit, publish and expose the creative efforts of the artist members to the public, promote mutual support among the artists to encourage high standards of artistic professionalism, and to maintain the organization. Second, is to maintain open channels of communication with the business, cultural and educational organizations within Sonoma Valley, and to promote, stimulate and support interest in the visual arts whether financially or through participation.
The purpose of this organization, as stated above, is to promote excellence in the visual arts. We intend that our members reflect high standards of professionalism, serious commitment, technical mastery and creativity. Several times a year through the screening committee procedure new Artist Members are chosen.

INSTRUCTIONS TO ALL ARTS GUILD JURORS
SCREENING CRITERIA
The purpose of the Arts Guild of Sonoma is to promote excellence and exemplary quality. All artists chosen to become Exhibiting Members must maintain these high standards.
At this phase each applicant personally submits examples of recent work for the jurors to review. Overall the work must be well designed, expertly executed without technical fault and show a personal identity; cohesive in content and presented attractively. The presentation of the work should be judged as a total point of view, rather than as separate pieces.
Five distinct criteria are used as the basis for each of the juror’s evaluations. An accepted applicant must be very strong in each category:
1. Aesthetic Concepts: This category considers overall aesthetic quality and form and surface treatment. Is the work integrated? Does the work have emotional impact and vitality, and does the applicant display the education and/or experience to continually produce consistent quality, professional work?
2. Craftsmanship: This category encompasses technical mastery and a general control of materials used.
3. Presentation: This category encompasses proper framing procedures, neatness and completeness of presentation. The work must be gallery ready.
4. Personal Identity: This category reflects the degree to which the artist's personal vision comes through the work. Has the applicant explored the medium enough to have developed a personal means of expression? Is the work original in concept? Is the entire body of work professional and consistent?
5. Quality: Is the work of this applicant comparable in quality with the majority of artist- members in the Guild?
JURY PROCESS
STEP ONE: Each juror will individually evaluate each applicants’ written application and slide presentation and a Yes vote for a further review and critique, No for no further review and Maybe for further consideration. The chairperson will then tabulate all votes. All jurors as a group will then reevaluate each applicant in the resulting Maybe category. In this group evaluation each juror may add or subtract his/her vote if a decision on an artist applicant is indecisive, thus bringing conclusion to the slide voting process. For those applicants that received a Yes vote in this step will receive a phone call and move onto step two.
STEP TWO: Each juror will individually evaluate each applicants' presentation and vote Yes for inclusion in AGS, No for non-acceptance and Maybe for further consideration. The chairperson will then tabulate all votes. All jurors as a group will then reevaluate each applicant in the resulting Maybe category. In this group evaluation each juror may add or subtract his/her vote if a decision on an artist applicant is indecisive, thus bringing conclusion to the voting process.
Letters of acceptance or non-acceptance will be sent within 1-1/2 to 2 weeks.
